Silent Reading Party NYC is a monthly event that brings New Yorkers into public spaces to be together while they read to themselves. Inspired by the Silent-Reading Parties that Christopher Frizelle hosts at the Sorrento Hotel in Seattle, Silent Reading Party NYC aims to give readers a comfortable, quiet environment in which reading can be a social but non-performative event. Instead of privileging a single book, a single reader, or group discussion, this event invites participants to share the actual experience of reading.
Founded in February 2014, Silent Reading Party NYC has held events at Muchmore’s in Williamsburg and Soda Bar in Prospect Heights. Thus, while it seeks to include denizens of all NYC boroughs and beyond, Silent Reading Party NYC events primarily based in Brooklyn.
